Art and Design

The Art and Design curriculum provides our pupils with a space to be inspired to express themselves and develop their creativity through experimenting, creating and evaluating their own work and the art of others. It is through our art curriculum that pupils have the opportunity to develop their self-confidence and self-expression whilst refining their art and design skills using a range of medium in a variety of techniques.  Our Art curriculum also supports our young people to make sense of the world around them whilst they learn how art and design has reflected our history and culture in the UK and across the world.

By the end of Key Stage 1, pupils will have been taught to:

  • to use a range of materials creatively to design and make products
  • to use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination
  • to develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space
  • about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work.

Key Stage 1 pupils are also introduced to using sketch books to capture their learning and design process.

By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils will have been taught to:

  • to create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas
  • to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay]
  • about great artists, architects and designers in history.

Our Art curriculum is organised in a two year cycle with all years group teaching the same art discipline at the same time to support the progression of skills.

We work towards curating our own art gallery once a year.
