History
At Melrose Primary, we recognise how the teaching of history helps our young people to make sense of the world around them. By learning about significant historical events and people, our children are able to gain a wider perspective of the lives of others and can use this to develop a curiosity to learn more. We are also believe that through history teaching, we develop pupils wider skills of empathy, critical thinking, debate and questioning which supports them to be better citizens for life in Modern Britain.
Our history units of work are based on the National Curriculum and organised in a two-year cycle in chorological order. The wider understanding of historical periods is developed through the use of core texts set within that theme and literacy lessons are used to help engage and immerse pupils in history.
