Maths

At Melrose Primary, we recognise that Mathematics is essential to everyday life. It teaches children how to make sense of the world around them through developing their ability to calculate, reason and in problem solving. It is our vision, that every child we teach develops their confidence in navigating successfully through everyday life.

Therefore, we provide a high-level mathematical education for understanding the world. At Melrose, children are encouraged to make mistakes in a safe and supportive environment. Like English, mathematics skills are embedded across the curriculum. Our students are supported to discuss these misconceptions with their peers and staff alike. The use of appropriate vocabulary is modelled throughout each lesson by both staff and children.

At Melrose Primary, the children will be taught content from their ability and not their chronological age. They will spend time becoming true masters of content, applying and being creative with new knowledge in multiple ways. Currently, we are using White Rose Maths, this approach includes using concrete objects, pictorial representations and abstract thinking.

We aim for all pupils to:

  • Become fluentin the fundamentals of mathematics
  • Reason mathematicallyby following a line of enquiry
  • Solve problemsby applying their mathematics to a variety of problems including unfamiliar contexts and real-life scenarios.

Sequence & structure

We follow the White Rose planning in EYFS, KS1 and KS2.
