PE
By the time, the children leave Melrose School they will be fit, healthy and well-balanced individuals. During their time at Melrose Primary, pupils are given a wide and exciting range of sporting and fitness opportunities in which to partake at any level of experience or ability. The balanced curriculum provides a platform for children to develop at their own pace, whilst gaining key knowledge and understanding around the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and a daily exercise routine.
Pupils will have the chance to take part in a variety of competitive sports such as athletics, hockey, basketball, football, tag-rugby and cricket as well as developing flexibility and co-ordination through gymnastics and dance. We have links with Merton Schools Sports Partnership, which enables the pupils to compete against pupils from local schools.
We will ensure that the children have the best chance possible to improve their swimming technique and aim to swim 25 metres at a local leisure centre. Pupils begin to swim when they are in lower Key Stage 2 and is further consolidated with booster sessions for those in upper Key Stage 2.
Through our PSHE curriculum, we enhance children’s knowledge and understanding around maintaining a healthy life-style through exploring a range of themes including healthy eating, developing an exercise routine through to sun safety and sleep routines and also take part in national campaigns such as ‘Eat them to defeat them’.
We have scooter and bike shelters available to pupils and visitors and encourage those who live locally to walk/scoot to school as well as an onsite woodland area where we teach Forest Schools to support a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
In addition to our PE curriculum, we offer additional opportunities for fitness and wellbeing including yoga and meditation, structured active games at lunchtimes and offsite Social Development Opportunities such as orienteering.
